Capturing Events
First of all, I love shooting for events. Not only do I get to capture some dope shots, but I also get to enjoy the event. The first paid event that I shot was nerve wrecking because I was fresh out-the-box and I really wanted to do a good job. I also kept thinking to myself that I can’t get another shot at this so I have to make every shot count. Needless to say, I did pretty good and was invited back to shoot for another event for this particular customer. Since then, I’ve shot at varioous events and really like the thrill of dipping in-and-out of the crowd to capture the “look” that I’m shooting to achieve. A homeboy of mine who is a dope photographer @vitlvizhewelsbyvejay told me quite plainly, “bruh, you are the photographer, you can go anywhere to get that perfect shot” and I’ve heeded to this in situations where I have free reign.
If you are looking to shoot at events here are a few things that I do:
The night before I like to have all of my batteries charged up and ready to go. I’ve been caught out there a few times with uncharged batteries and it’s a bad position to be in at the gig.
I talk with my client before the event and ask them what shots that they absolutely want and then I ask again the day of the event because things can change at the drop of a hat.
I like to get to the gig early to see the layout and it also gives me time just in case I forget something that I need.
Work the room!! I do my best to get shots from all different angles because when I get home, I have options for what I want to present to the client.
If your client wants a group picture, get it before the event begins because once the event starts people sweat, are occupied or even leave right after the event.
